Deaconess Notebooks and Lists 1892-1970

Bound notebooks and handwritten and typewritten lists detailing the work histories of Lutheran Deaconess Motherhouse and Training School, Baltimore, Maryland (BMD) deaconess candidates, probationers, and consecrated deaconesses comprise records for this series. Records are from 1892-1970 and include two bound notebooks, one handwritten register, and several typewritten lists. The bound notebooks and register contain the work history of deaconess candidates, probationers and consecrated deaconesses, while the typewritten lists contain only information about consecrated deaconesses. The notebooks comprise two volumes and each is indexed alphabetically by the person's given name, not surname. Each handwritten entry includes information related to when the person entered as a candidate, when she advanced to probationer, her course of education, her first assignment, and her date of consecration. Subsequent entries note when vacations were taken, changes in work assignments, consecration anniversaries, date and location of retirement, date and place of death, and location of burial. Leaves of absence and circumstances surrounding leave requests are noted and if applicable, a date of withdrawal is indicated with a reason for the withdrawal. Several entries are incomplete. It appears that some entries were added later and do not have multiple entries as do most entries. These later entries also include the name of the deaconess's parents. In addition to these bound notebooks, there is also a handwritten list titled a "Register of Deaconesses." This register includes entries for deaconesses in order of the dates they entered as probationers. Each individual entry includes the following fields: name, residence, single or widow, date of birth, parents' names, pastor's name, pastor's address, entered as candidate, accepted as probationer, set apart as deaconess, and remarks. Remarks usually indicated death, withdrawal, or resignation. The other typewritten lists in this series were generated circa late 1950s and 1960. They record the roll of consecrated deaconesses by different criteria: age, name and address, consecration status, retirement status, home synod or state, or other miscellaneous categories.
